Felt Sculptures

Material Study

Effective packaging designers rely on an ability to solve three-dimensional problems across a range of materials. While not a packaging project, these sculptures test a similar skill set through the lens of a form-making phenomenon in nature: emergence.

Emergence describes how low-level units aggregate to achieve high levels of complexity. These felt sculptures are informed by the concept of emergence as it is revealed through microscopy images. A custom geometric pattern, inspired by what bone looks like under a microscope, aggregates holes that change and evolve as they flow over the felt.
