Imagining a Genetically Engineered Future
Designers rely on an ability to tell stories through their work. Successful stories, as Anthony Dunne suggests in his book Speculative Everything, do not tell readers what they already know, but rather marvel at what could be.
Told in the form of a darkly humorous children’s story, Neo Natural offers a hypothetical look at a future where gene-editing software becomes readily available to the public at large. Custom illustrations of hybrid animals create the look and feel of a world, like our own, but weirdly different.
Neo Natural demonstrates what happens when a creative individual, who normally works on commercial packaging and copywriting projects, lets down her hair to explore speculative storytelling informed by eccentric constraints.
